More than 34 gigawatts of electrical generating capacity are set to retire thanks to Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency Mercury & Toxic Rules and Cross State Pollution Rule–most of these retirements will come from coal fired power plant closures shuttering over 10% of the U.S. coal-fired generating capacity.

President Obama’s efforts to develop renewable power sources and persuade Congress to adopt a long-term energy policy will be his priorities (not jobs) should he win a second term, said Heather Zichal, Obama’s Deputy Asst for Energy & Climate Change, according to Bloomberg/Businessweek Zichal added, clean energy programs and efficiency initiatives will be a focus for the president if he’s reelected in November.
