Step aside, Kim Jong-il, the U.S. news cycles this Fourth of July weekend aren’t going to be about your threatened missile launch aiming at Hawaii. Americans want to know why Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) decided to step down mid-term.
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will become the new governor of Alaska in the end of July.
Ever since she became McCain’s running mate in 2008, pundits and analysts have predicted Palin focusing more on national politics and possibly running in 2012. Her decision not to seek re-election further fanned the likelihood of this prediction.
She’s no doubt a Republican Party and conservative rock star, but does she still have what it takes from now until 2012 to unify disillusioned Republicans, independents, and conservatives? Are people still interested in her and those who make fun or offend her (e.g. David Letterman)? Will people label her resignation as a political stunt or stand behind her in her political ambitions?
Gov. Palin is putting a lot on the line, but somehow I think she’s really at peace with her decision and how it will impact her career and her personal life. She’s close to reaching the pinnacle as a politician, and seems to have reached that point in her life. Best of luck, Gov. Palin!
